Sample of My Work for Graduate School Admission in Geology and Closely Related Areas
MS Geology, Geophysics 1st Paragraph Sample for Grad Admission
I struggled to reconcile my interests, skills, and passion with the selection of a major for my first two years of college until I took my first Geology course. Since that time, geology and geophysics have stood at the center of my world. In my Energy, Fossil Fuel and Society class at Purdue University I discovered a great deal about how the exploration sector operates within the energy industry and I became increasingly fascinated. This led me to further individual research involving seismic method applications, particularly near-surface seismology and 3D shallow reflection.
Why I want to help you get admitted to Graduate School in Geology
I feel strongly that Geoscientists should continue professional development to remain current in their field. They should maintain honesty and integrity in all conduct and publications, fully acknowledge the contributions of others, and accept responsibility for their own errors. They should provide scientific service only in areas of competency. Economic consequences and implications of geologic work should be acknowledged. Conflicts of interest, both real and perceived, should be acknowledged and avoided, when appropriate. I am an expert at what Admission Committees in the area of geology and geoscience are looking for in professionals and I am imminently qualified to help you draft a spectacular statement that shows that you stay abreast of industry standards and trends.
Geology and the Public Good
Geoscientists should hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public in applications of geoscience knowledge to society’s needs. Efforts should be made to educate the public on all matters related to the geosciences (e.g., hazards, resources, and environment). Public comments on geoscience matters should be made with care and accuracy, without unsubstantiated, exaggerated, or premature statements; they should be made clearly and concisely.
Helping With Your Personal Statement of Purpose for Graduate School in Geology, Masters, PHD
We see the study of Geology as critical to meeting our environmental challenges of the future.
Geology is the study of the internal structure, materials, chemical/physical processes, and physical/biological history of the earth. Students of geology encounter science in the broadest sense because geology involves the application of principles of physics, mathematics, biology, and chemistry as well as many aspects of engineering and environmental sciences. Because the scope of geology is broad, specialized branches have evolved. For example, geomorphologists investigate the nature and origin of land forms by studying the causes and effects of dynamic earth processes; structural geologists are concerned with the deformation of rock masses in the earth's crust and the forces that have affected them; and stratigraphers investigate the thickness, geometry, and distribution of layered rocks to understand the chronology of geologic events.
Geologists also may specialize as economic geologists who explore the earth for various kinds of mineral deposits and supervise their development. Others may become ground-water geologists concerned with the distribution, movement, and chemical quality of our precious underground water supply. Many have become petroleum geologists who explore for and develop deposits of coal, oil, natural gas, and other earth resource materials. Another area that appeals to many geology majors is environmental geology, in which geological skills are required to help predict, avoid, or mitigate problems connected with pollution, urban development, and geologic hazards such as flooding and excessive erosion. It would be an honor for us to help you with your Personal Statement of Purpose for Graduate School in Geology.

A 26-year-old woman from Mexico, I am profoundly dedicated to the goal of serving my country, as well as society generally speaking; I seek to do this by doing all that I can to assure that our petroleum industry is upgraded to the highest level of operational standards world-wide with respect to productivity and efficiency as well as safety. I see the Master’s Program at XXXX University to be one of the worldwide leaders in our industry and I see you program as a good fit for my long term interests as a petroleum industry professional.
The Humanitarian Side of Geology
Working in a humanitarian field when you’re a geologist often means working for nonprofit organizations, where no big mining firm or other environmentally damaging organization is making gains from unethical practices. You could choose to go to a developing country and teach, working directly with people. Or you may want to get stuck in to more practical work with an environmental focus.
Inspiration
Dr. Carlos Primo C David is a Geologist at the University of the Philippines, National Institute of Geological Sciences (UP NIGS). He studied at the University of the Philippines, and then got a PhD from Stanford University. He now works as a hydrologist, running rain and flood models at NIGS in Manila, where intense typhoon and monsoon seasons cause extensive annual floods and deaths. At the beginning of his career, David wasn’t so concerned with the social impact of his work, but he now works with charities like Christian Aid, who provide opportunities for geologists and hydrologists like him to help vulnerable communities that live in riverside slum dwellings. He and his colleagues have developed Project NOAH, a simple communications tool, which provides the Filipino public with real-time weather and flood information via the internet and text messages. For more info, go to www.noah.dost.gov.ph.
NGOs
Geology for Global Development aims to encourage and support young geoscientists to make a great contribution to international development throughout their careers. In the past, they have run placement programs in Guatemala, the Himalayas and worked in partnership with CAFOD’s Humanitarian Department and other organizations. For more information about their placements, projects and how to support this nonprofit, go to www.gfgd.org.
If you’ve just completed your Bachelor’s degree and would like to travel abroad and learn a new language, what about a volunteer program? www.goabroad.com offers 106 geology volunteer abroad programs, which could lead onto a paid position and/or some amazing work experience. Fly off to Thailand, Peru, Colombia, Cambodia or Nicaragua and make a difference. Volunteering looks great on your resume and can help give you a leg up when it comes to rising in the ranks because with a bit of motivation, you can often take on more responsibility when you’re working as a volunteer than you would be able to in a paid position.
Courses
Ok, now let’s look at the benefits of making yourself a specialist. The first benefit is that you are able to go for more senior positions with a master’s degree. You can provide more specialist knowledge and expertise to NGOs, and ultimately help more people more effectively that way. It will also help you get a job, as the pool of applicants in your area of specialization will be smaller. Convinced yet? Let’s look at some of the courses out there that might interest you.

Statements of Excellence for Admission to Graduate School in Geology
Sample 1st Paragraph for the Master’s Degree in Geology, Focus on Water Resources
Like most Americans, I grew up accepting that clean water is abundantly and permanently available. As my interest in Geology developed, I wondered at the sophisticated and complex means by which this literally vital asset is made available to us. When I became aware that many of the world’s population lack access to sufficient water or have access only to water that may carry disease, I made a decision that I would seek to acquire the skills and knowledge to enable me to do something to help those deprived of adequate supplies of clean water. It is my ultimate objective to obtain a leading role in a company or NGO concerned with finding and implementing solutions and to become an Associate Professor of Geology, sharing my knowledge and passion for this life-giving field of study and work with others.
